A five-storey building being used as a paying guest (PG) accommodation for students collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday afternoon, leaving six people dead and several others injured. The building, located near Delhi University’s South Campus, reportedly collapsed at around 1:30 pm while repair and renovation work was underway. Rescue teams from the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, NDRF and other emergency agencies were deployed to the site to search for people trapped under the rubble.
The tragic incident was captured on CCTV cameras, showing the structure suddenly giving way within seconds as a huge cloud of dust and debris spread across the narrow road. In one of the videos, a nearby shopkeeper can be seen running for his life moments before the building collapses. Rescue operations continued through the night, with 11 people reportedly rescued from the debris. One person rescued during the overnight operation later died in hospital, taking the death toll to six.
The incident has also raised serious questions about building safety, construction practices and regulatory oversight in Delhi. Authorities are investigating whether the ongoing renovation work contributed to the collapse. An FIR has reportedly been registered against the building owner, while a magisterial inquiry has also been ordered. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has announced action against unauthorised and structurally unsafe buildings following the tragedy.
