Our community animals never let us feel lonely. We have co-existed with them for thousands of years. They protect our neighborhoods and give us loyal companionship. Those who step up to care for them—the caregivers—have specific rights protected by law.
Key Rights & Protections
Must Not Be Harassed
Animal feeders are protected by law. Any attempt to interfere, harass, or threaten individuals feeding community animals is illegal and constitutes criminal intimidation.
Designated Feeding Places
Caregivers must be given designated places to feed dogs as per the natural territory of the dogs in the area. Relocating dogs from their territory is strictly prohibited by law.
Civic Duties
- Duty to be Kind: It is the fundamental duty of every citizen of India to show compassion to all living creatures, as mandated by Article 51-A (g) of the Indian Constitution.
- Duty of the Police: It is the explicit duty of the police to register an FIR (First Information Report) if anyone is found being cruel to animals.
- Right to Approach the Magistrate: If the police refuse to take action or register a complaint regarding animal cruelty, citizens have the right to approach the local Magistrate directly.
