Shiv Sena (UBT) Yuva Sena district chief Vikram Randhave on Tuesday released four to five stray dogs inside the office of Niphad Nagar Panchayat Chief Officer Dheeraj Bhamre, alleging that the civic administration had failed to address the growing stray dog problem in the town, The Indian Express reported.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. It shows Randhave entering the chief officer’s office carrying bags.

He then opens the bags and releases the stray dogs onto and around the officer’s table. Surprised by the incident, Bhamre, who was seated at his desk, is seen moving his chair backwards.

One of the dogs, apparently frightened after being confined inside the bag, quickly moves to a corner of the room and sits on another table, while another roams freely inside the office. Randhave is later seen speaking to the chief officer during the protest, as per the report.

As part of the demonstration, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader also placed a garland made of currency notes on the chief officer’s table, accusing the Nagar Panchayat of failing to act despite repeated complaints.

Randhave claimed that more than 400 stray dogs roam the Nagar Panchayat area and that over 100 people suffer dog-bite injuries every month. He alleged that the civic body had not put in place an effective system to catch and sterilise stray dogs despite several complaints from residents.

He was quoted by The Indian Express saying that the issue has become a major concern for children, senior citizens and motorists, with many victims requiring painful anti-rabies treatment after dog attacks.

Dr Rajiv Tambale of the Niphad Sub-District Hospital said five to six dog-bite victims visit the hospital every day for treatment. “This means there are more than 100 dog-bite cases every month. Anti-rabies vaccine is currently available at the hospital,” he said, as quoted by The Indian Express.

Randhave warned that if the Nagar Panchayat does not take concrete steps to control the stray dog population, he would once again release stray dogs inside the chief officer’s office, this time in the presence of local residents. He said the protest was meant to show officials the difficulties people have been facing because of the growing stray dog menace.
