A horrific incident took place in Bikaner where stray dogs brutally attacked a 4-year-old boy on his first day of school. The dogs tore the skin off his head, bit his ear and severely mauled his body. The child was rescued after a passerby heard his screams and chased the dogs away.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at Swami Vivekananda Model Government School in Upani village of Bikaner district. The injured child has been admitted to PBM Hospital, where doctors said he sustained critical injuries and will require multiple surgeries.

Had gone to school for first time with his brother

The victim, Ramu (4), son of Rampratap Siddh and a resident of Upani village, had gone to school for the first time with his elder brother. After attending class for about one and a half hours, the child went outside to the school ground.

During this time, the school’s main gate was reportedly left open, allowing a pack of stray dogs to enter the premises. The dogs then attacked the child and inflicted severe injuries.

Villager rescued child after hearing screams

The child’s cries and the dogs’ barking did not immediately alert school staff. A villager passing near the school heard the screams and rushed to rescue the child from the dogs. Family members were informed and immediately took him to PBM Hospital in a critical condition.

Plastic surgery and long treatment required

PBM Trauma in-charge Dr L.K. Kapil said the child suffered serious head injuries and would require plastic surgery, including skin grafting. He said the wounds will first need to be cleaned multiple times before further procedures are carried out.

Doctors added that the treatment will be lengthy, and it may take up to a year for the scalp skin to regenerate. Multiple plastic surgeries may be required, and the child will need intensive medical care and monitoring.

The child can be seen sitting outside the school classroom covered in blood.

Dogs ate scalp Dr. M.L. Kajla, the pediatric surgeon at PBM Hospital treating Ramu, says that the child is otherwise healthy, but surgery will be performed where the dogs have mauled him. Specifically, the dogs have eaten away his scalp, which can only be repaired through plastic surgery.

Villagers sat on dharna outside the school after the accident.

Anger among villagers, protest in front of school Villagers have accused the school administration of serious negligence. People are asking why the main gate was not closed, why there was no guard at the gate, and why no one noticed when the child reached from classroom to gate. Villagers claim that these dogs have previously attacked cattle and another child as well.

Principal said, ‘Complaints were made earlier too’ Principal Subhash Meena said that the child went towards the washroom and left within moments. The incident is tragic. He said that complaints about violent dogs around the school gate had been made before as well. Information about the incident has been given to the SDM, police administration and Chief Block Education Officer.
