If there is one thing the late Ratan Tata was known for beyond his remarkable corporate achievements, it was his deep and unwavering love for dogs. He was a passionate advocate for animal welfare, especially for stray dogs. He ensured that lost and abandoned dogs were cared for and even set up shelters in Mumbai, where strays received food and medical attention. Stray dogs have also long found a safe space within the premises of Taj Hotels across cities.
For example, at Taj Bengal, one of the most adored figures today is not a celebrity guest or a visiting dignitary, but an Indie dog named Thumki.

Born on the hotel campus to her mother Chumki, Thumki chose to stay back even after her sister was adopted into a new home. Over time, she became an inseparable part of the Taj Bengal family. She struts across the grand hotel as though it is her personal estate!
Thumki recently went viral after a video showed her happily prancing through the hotel’s grand lobby. The clip, shared on social media, captured her playful authority as she trotted around like a true hostess.

According to posts about her daily routine, Thumki begins each morning with what the staff fondly call her “perimeter rounds.” She walks across the property, chases birds, and keeps a watchful eye on the surroundings before guests begin their day. Once the hotel grows busy, she quietly retreats to her cosy shelter near the parking lot, careful not to disturb anyone.

Her well-being, along with that of other campus dogs, has been supported by Senior Vice President of Operations K. Mohanchandran and his wife Seema, who is an animal rescuer, reported India Today. Because of their efforts, Thumki receives vaccinations, regular care, and a safe place to rest.
