KMC directed to submit an action plan by September 17

DIMAPUR — The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has been directed to submit an action plan by September 17 for the relocation and management of a dog shelter as the district administration and concerned departments discussed measures to address the growing issue of stray and free-roaming dogs in Kohima town and its colonies.

A meeting of line departments and concerned officials was held at the chamber of the deputy commissioner, Kohima, on Friday to deliberate on the issue.

According to a DIPR report, the meeting discussed incidents of dog bites, dogs roaming freely without leashes and concerns over dog faeces being left on roads, footpaths and other public areas.

The meeting stressed the need for responsible pet ownership, compulsory vaccination and registration of pet dogs, proper disposal of dog waste and effective control of free-roaming dogs. It was noted that while there is no law prohibiting people from keeping dogs as pets, owners are responsible for ensuring that their dogs remain under proper control and do not roam freely without a leash.

The meeting also discussed the relocation and reactivation of a dog shelter. The KMC informed that a shelter had earlier been maintained near the Old Zoo before it was discontinued following complaints from the public over noise caused by the dogs.

It was informed that dogs kept at the shelter were properly cared for and provided adequate feed.

Owners who came to reclaim their pets were allowed to do so after paying the applicable charges for their stay, while dogs that remained unclaimed for a week could be adopted.
