Yet, amid these troubling headlines, a remarkable story from Odisha’s Mayurbhanj has reminded people that street dogs are not always a threat. Sometimes, they can become protectors.

Kali’s Last Battle

In Dhirakula village of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, a stray dog named Kali sacrificed her life to save more than 30 kindergarten children from a venomous snake. The incident took place near a local school where young children were sitting and playing outside. Suddenly, a venomous snake slithered dangerously close to the school premises.

Before anyone could react, Kali sensed the danger and charged towards the reptile.

A Sacrifice That Saved Lives

Villagers said Kali fought the snake fiercely to stop it from reaching the children. During the struggle, she was bitten several times on the face and mouth.

Despite suffering severe injuries, she continued the fight until the snake was finally killed. However, the poison had already spread through her body. Soon after saving the children, Kali collapsed and died. Her sacrifice ensured that not a single child was harmed.

A Hero’s Farewell

Kali’s bravery deeply moved the entire village. Residents organised a flower-decked funeral procession for her, covering her body with a white cloth and honouring her like a family member. In death, Kali was no longer seen as a stray dog, but as a guardian who gave her life for the village’s children.

She had no home… yet she protected like family. 🐾🥺❤️
